Otie King | a retrospective exhibition

Dedicated to the life and works of our resident vernacular artist.

‘Dawning’

This early work, compact and spare of form presages the confidence that would come to mark Otie’s later career

Mellifluent

This introspective work documents the turmoil and fracturing of the artist’s own psyche, during a time of great personal upheaval (his chew toy burst)

The Path

An enigmatic piece, hinting at both the ritual underpinnings that give meaning to form in Otie’s ovure, and the discordance arising from the artist’s life-long struggle with the essence of meaning itself

Exit Strategy

A bittersweet self parody; while exhibiting a façade of artistic success and achievement, the artist reveals the uncomfortable sacrifice of cultural substance necessary in the pursuit of speed of delivery

Content is King

A further meditation on the evolution of capitalist global media culture, where demand for an increasingly frenetic pace of delivery increasingly displaces any creative substance in artistic endeavour

Greenpiece

Traversing uneasy terrain, this work challenges the hypocrisy of demands that we become ‘one’ with the planet, seemingly oblivious to the fact that in so doing, we may destroy what we claim to love.

Lifecycle

A mixed media piece, this provocative installation reminds us of the evanescent results of all striving, yet strikes a note of hope in that what we leave behind may at least nurture our fellow travellers in the eternal cycle.
